Does DAC8 apply to all types of crypto-assets?

DAC8 applies to “reportable crypto-assets,” including those used for payments or investments (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum). Certain assets, like Central Bank Digital Currencies and specific e-money tokens, are excluded.

Does only zondacrypto collect the DAC8 data?

No. The DAC8 directive applies to all Crypto-Asset Service Providers offering services to EU residents, not only to zondacrypto.

 

For what purpose will the data be used? (in accordance with Article 16 of DAC8)

The data collected will be used solely for the purpose of fulfilling reporting obligations to the competent tax authorities of EU Member States.

These authorities may use the information provided for taxation, control, and enforcement purposes within their jurisdictions.

 

What do I need to do with the DAC8?

What information will be reported under DAC8?

Reporting Crypto-Asset Service Providers will be required to report information for each reportable user. This includes personal identification details: 

  • Name

  • Address

  • Taxpayer Identification Number - TIN

  • Date/place of birth

And aggregated annual transaction information (in case of a crypto-asset).

What is DAC8?

DAC8 is an EU directive introducing automatic information exchange rules for crypto-assets. It requires platforms like zondacrypto to collect and report information about their users and crypto transactions to national tax authorities.

When does DAC8 come into effect?

DAC8 will become applicable on 1 January 2026. The first reporting period will be the calendar year 2026. The first exchange of information is scheduled to take place by 2027.

 

Why do you need to collect the DAC8 information from me?

As a regulated service provider, zondacrypto is required to verify users’ tax residency and collect accurate details, including their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), to comply with EU reporting obligations under DAC8.

The European Union is introducing new tax transparency rules known as DAC8, which will impact the European crypto-asset industry. DAC8 is a new EU-wide directive aimed at increasing tax transparency for crypto-assets. Its purpose is to create a uniform reporting standard for Crypto-Asset Service Providers. To comply with DAC8, we will be legally required to collect and report information about our users who are residents in the EU.

The information we will need to report to your national tax authority includes your personal identification details, such as your name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), a summary of your transaction activity for the year, grouped by the type of crypto-asset. This includes totals for your purchases, sales, and transfers of crypto-assets. This is a new standard requirement for all regulated crypto platforms operating within the European Union.

These new rules will take effect on January 1, 2026. This means the first reporting period will cover all transactions made during the 2026 calendar year.
